Should You Insist on a Paternity Test?

If you’re in a relationship and there’s a baby on the way, if there’s a chance the identity of the biological father is in question you may be wondering about the wisdom of pursuing a paternity test. You may be reluctant to imply that there is any question as to who fathered the child, as it could cause more than a little turmoil in the relationship. The fact is, whether you are the mother or the (potential) father, whether you are married or simply dating, knowing the truth about who fathered the child is beneficial in many ways.
For Men
Men who are not certain that they are the father of a child may struggle with the idea of bringing up a youngster who is not their biological child. A man who suspects that someone else is the father may not wish to take on the financial, legal, and other responsibilities associated with fatherhood.
On the other hand, for a man who is looking forward to being a father, a paternity test that proves a biological relationship will provide that man with the legal rights he deserves, including:
- The possibility of sole- or joint-custody;
- Access to visitation;
- The ability to share in decision-making related to the child.
Of course, along with these rights comes the responsibility to help support the child financially, emotionally, and otherwise.
For Women
One of the biggest reasons a paternity test can be helpful for women is that the costs of raising the child can be shared. Whether or not the father wishes to be involved in raising the baby, he will still be legally obligated to pay child support in an amount based on the earnings of each of you. It could be a significant reason to seek clarity on paternity.
A woman who is interested in the financial assistance a father can provide must also be prepared for the father to assert his right to share in the raising of the child. He will be legally entitled to seek custody and to participate in determining significant matters, including decisions about religion, school, medical issues, and more. A mother who does not want to give up power in these areas might rethink the idea of insisting on a paternity test just to collect child support.
For the Child
There’s no question that children are curious about who their parents are. Not only does knowing the answer provide a level of emotional comfort; it can also be important in terms of heredity, health issues, insurance, and inheritance. If there’s a downside for kids, it’s difficult to identify.
