6 Things About Divorce

Divorce22

Divorce: it’s a huge decision, and one that results in loss, no matter how you slice it. You lose a partner, a routine, and a way of life. It’s an emotional drain, regardless of who initiated it, and regardless of how amicable things are between the two of you. Whether it feels excruciating or just mildly difficult today, you should know that tomorrow is another day. There will be a lot of mixed emotions coming your way—guilt, anger, anxiety, hope, satisfaction– but you will get through it. Here are some things that may be ahead.

  1. You may feel judged. That can be isolating. Your couple friends may not know how to respond to your split, half concerned about having to take sides, and half concerned that whatever destroyed your marriage might be contagious.
  2. You’ll find new connections. There are other singles out there, many of whom are raising kids on their own, and many who’ve experienced situations similar to yours. It won’t hurt so much when you say good-bye to couple-friends when you’re able to embrace new people who can help the new you to thrive.
  3. You’ll find yourself feeling proud. You’ll learn new skills, manage new problems, and navigate new adventures. Who knew you were so capable?
  4. You’ll cherish alone time. While juggling multiple responsibilities, you’ll discover that solo time is pretty nice. It may have seemed scary when you were looking into the divorce, but, now that you’ve come through the worst of it, you’ve discovered that you like you, and being alone feels darn good.
  5. There will be some sad times. Some of the firsts will hurt: the first time you sleep alone, the first time you spend a holiday by yourself, and the first time you walk into a restaurant and request a table for one.
  6. Pretty soon you’ll be an expert on divorce. Instead of everyone giving you tips on how to get through the tough times, you’ll be the one with experience and advice. You’ll have managed the finances, the shared parenting, the foray into the world of dating, and come out alive and well. Maybe it took some time, but doesn’t anything worth having? And here you are—happy, successful, and planning a future that looks good to you. It took some work to get here, and there’s plenty more ahead. But you’re up for it. Divorce is just a blip, and it’s behind you.
